About NLGJA > Staff, Consultants & Contributors > David Barre Biography

David Barre

David Barre joins NLGJA in August 2007 as the organization’s third Executive Director. Barre will oversee all aspects of NLGJA’s operations and work closely with the National Board and National Staff to set the strategic agenda for the organization.

Prior to joining NLGJA, Barre served as the Director of Communications for the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), a professional organization representing more than 22,000 attorneys. Barre was responsible for developing and implementing a strategic communications plan for the organization to raise ACC’s visibility in the legal and business communities, as well as for improving member engagement and retention.

From 1998 until 2004, Barre worked for Greenpeace, first as the Coordinator of Creative Services and later as the Director of Communications and a member of the organization’s senior management team. Barre led the development and implementation of strategies to inform and engage a wide range of constituencies, and served as the editor in chief of Greenpeace magazine delivered to the organization’s 250,000 members. He oversaw staff in the areas of media relations, publications, graphic design, online communications, and photo and video production. As part of the senior management team, Barre helped direct the organization through strategic planning processes as well as complicated legal situations. During his tenure, Barre was also charged with taking on interim roles, such as serving as the Communications Director for Greenpeace International in Amsterdam.

Barre came to Washington, DC in 1994 to serve as the Communications Manager for the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC). He was responsible for all aspects of its communications efforts including event promotion, media relations, publications and social marketing campaigns. Barre also managed an annual conference—the National AIDS Treatment Advocates Forum—with responsibility for fundraising, program development and marketing.

Barre began his career at Sasson Licensing Corporation in New York City, which owned the Sasson and Cotler clothing brands. He was responsible for developing and placing all print and television advertising for the company, as well as overseeing public relations, special events and retail promotions.

Barre received a BFA from New York University’s dramatic writing program in 1989. The same year, his play, “The Seen,” was performed as part of NYU’s Festival of New Works.
