Mission & History

Founded in 1990, NLGJA is an organization of journalists, media professionals, educators and students that works within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues. NLGJA opposes all forms of workplace bias and provides professional development to its members.

Strategic Plan

National Office Staff

As NLGJA has grown to include 1,300 members, so has the demand for professional staff to strategically meet the organization’s mission. Headquartered in Washington, DC, NLGJA’s National Office has expanded from one full-time position in 1996 to a professional staff that handles the day-to-day operations of the association.

At the national level, NLGJA is led by a board of directors that reflects the organization’s geographic and professional diversity.

Chapter Leadership

NLGJA's 25 chapters are lead by freelance journalists, television and radio personalities, LGBT media professionals, and reporters for major metropolitan dailies.

Remembering Roy Aarons

Leroy F. Aarons, the former Oakland Tribune executive editor who founded NLGJA in his living room in Piedmont, CA, died at 70 on November 28, 2004 after a battle with cancer.
