The old gray lady – The New York Times – spilled some ink yesterday, July 1, on the sudden closure of the New York Blade, a biweekly LGBT publication in the Metro region.

According to the article, the paper laid off its editor in chief and suspended publication, effective immediately. It’s last printed paper was its Pride issue, which the Times noted was “a relatively slim 28 pages.”

The news comes as the Blade’s sister publication, HX Magazine, faces a precarious future. It was sold this week to unnamed buyers and it remains to be seen what happens to the gay club rag. As for the Blade, its executive, Matthew Bank, of HX Media, which was formed in 2005 by the merger of The Blade and HX Magazine, held out the possibility that it very well could come back in time for its next issue, which was scheduled to be Friday, July 10.

“Everyone was let go, but the people on The Blade know that they may come back if The Blade is coming back,” said Bank. “It doesn’t have an issue scheduled until a week from Friday. There are a lot of things that can happen between now and then.”
