Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship/Grant: 2010

The Los Angeles Chapter is now accepting applications for its 2010-2011 Scholarship. Student journalists who have completed multimedia or traditional journalism writing projects on issues affecting the LGBT community may apply for the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, Los Angeles chapter scholarship. The financial award for the scholarship winner is up to $1,000, and is awarded annually, based on chapter finances. Projects in the planning stages that are stalled for lack of funds, also may apply.

Special consideration will be give to projects that demonstrate innovation and that encourage a better understanding of issues affecting the lesbian, gay, transgendered, and bisexual communities. Projects that use non-traditional story ideas are encouraged along with traditional print, magazine, or broadcast news stories. The selection committee also will consider the student's previous journalistic work on LGBT issues.

The deadline for submitting a scholarship application this year is April 5, 2010. Applications postmarked after the due date will not be considered for this year's award. Applications may be sent via U.S. mail or via e-mail attachment. The letter of application should contain the applicant's name, address (both mailing and e-mail), and the institution of higher education. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education. An application letter should describe the context in which the story was developed or outline a future project with a timeline for completion. Applicants also are encouraged to discuss previous projects involving LGBT issues and to enclose copies of those stories/projects.

To summarize, applicants must:

  • Provide proof of enrollment or acceptance at a two- or four-year college or university.
  • Reside in or be enrolled in a university or college in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Ventura counties.
  • Demonstrate an interest in a career in journalism or mass communication
  • Either have shown an interest in and/or propose a project or traditional news story that encourages a better understanding of issues affecting the LGBT communities.
