Dear
NLGJA Members & Friends,
NLGJA's
National Convention is
the reason that I'm a journalist.
Student
newspapers had always been just a hobby. When
I was at American University, I loved working at
The
Eagle, and, prior to that, at Freeport High School’s
Pretz-News. However, I was an international studies
major and, for some reason, it had never occurred
to
me that I might combine my interests.
At
that first convention in Philadelphia, I met
hundreds of journalists doing amazing work – and
making a daily contribution to improve the quality
of
journalism in the US and internationally. It
was an
inspiration and it led me to reconsider my career
path. I
applied for an internship at AllAfrica.com, where
I eventually worked for three wonderful years. I
now work on the newsdesk at washingtonpost.com.
I
know many NGLJA colleagues who’ve
made career moves
based on connections or opportunities that they
made
at a convention. I have mentors to whom I can turn
for
advice in my work, and I have made a caring group
of
friends who I can’t wait to see every year.
NLGJA
conferences have helped me grow, both personally
and
professionally. And this
year will be no different. I’m excited
for the
panels, the speakers and – yes – the
beach. I hope to
see you all there.
Sincerely,
Margaret
McElligott
