Martha
Barnette, co-host of KPBS-FM's "A
Way with Words," dishes her San Diego top
five. And what's not to love about a trip to an animal
park that includes a winery or two?
| 1 |
Cowles
Mountain near San Diego State University.
It's the highest point within San Diego's
city
limits. It's
a moderately easy 45-minute hike to the top,
where you get views of the bay, the coast and
Tijuana. |
| 2 |
Pacific
Beach. There are plenty of beaches for
strolling here, so the problem
is choosing which one. PB's popular with the
gay folks I know. |
| 3 |
The
Wild Animal Park. Yeah, yeah, there's
the
Zoo, but the WAP is way cool. It's
affiliated with the Zoo, and as their Web site
says, "You'll never get closer to the animals."
It's a schlep to get up to Escondido, but
there
are several wineries to hit on the
way back after a day at the park. |

Balboa
Park. Some regard it as the gayest architecture
this side of Ludwig's
Castle. Plus, lots of cool museums, the Old
Globe Theater modeled after the one in England,
and
a decent restaurant, The
Prado at Balboa Park, with pleasant
outdoor dining. |

Any
of the many, many theater companies that
make up this town's vibrant
theater
scene. The gay theater, Diversionary,
is on a street with several good restaurants,
including Parkhouse
Eatery and Soltan
Banoo. |
