NLGJA member and former San Diego Chapter President Rachel Ralston shares her San Diego top ten, including some very enlightening advice for doctoring a stingray sting.

Don’t be alarmed by low-flying aircraft. We have a lot of it here. Note the landing path when (if) you’re flying in, and remember that when you’re walking through Balboa Park and suddenly the belly of a Boeing 737 roars directly overhead. Also, when sunning yourself on the sandy beach in front of the Hotel del Coronado, you may have an uncomfortably close encounter with a pack of F-16s coming in for a landing at the base located nearby.
Hungry? Hit the taco shops. The smaller the shop, the better the food, usually. If you’re unsure about which one to go to and there isn’t a line out the door to clue you in, try to find one that has a number attached to it (i.e., Roberto’s #10, Alberto’s #9, etc.). Warning: If you’re sensitive to spicy food, do not eat the pickled carrots!
If you’re renting a wetsuit to go surfing, it’s a good idea to rent booties too. San Diego’s waters are teeming with a fascinating array of sea creatures, including stingrays. And getting stung by one of those fellas hurts. If you do get stung, the best remedy is to 1) urinate on the affected area (or have someone else do it), and 2) take shots of tequila regularly throughout the day to kill the pain. No joke – it really is the best remedy.
“Enron-by-the-Sea.” Har-har. We’ve heard that one before.
Beware the hidden canyons. Just because a street looks like it goes all the way through doesn’t mean it actually does. You will mainly encounter this problem in the areas surrounding Balboa Park, North Park, South Park and Old Town.
San Diego has some rough roads and occasionally a pothole large enough to give you whiplash. On that note, with all the new construction underway in our city, you may feel you should have rented a Humvee rather than that Ford Taurus you got from Avis.
Ladies, San Diego’s last remaining lesbian bar closed a year or so ago. If you’re looking to mingle with the locals, head to Bourbon Street on Friday night (ladies night – and it’s packed with ’em) and check out the club listings in one of the local LGBT rags to see if anything strikes your fancy. Any other night of the week, Numbers, The Flame and Bacchus House have ladies events going on, but you’ll probably have more luck at Baja Betty’s or Urban Mo’s (they serve food).
Gentlemen, San Diego has a vast array of clubs and bars to suit most tastes. There’s also Black’s Beach, and well, just ask one of the guys in our chapter. Really, you won’t be at a loss for entertaining options. It will be Labor Day weekend, after all.
Make an effort to have a drink and/or dinner at one of our many rooftop restaurants and bars, where the views are spectacular. It’s a great option for your first night in town. Top of the Park, Bertrand at Mister A’s and Stingaree are good places to start.
Don't leave San Diego without catching at least one beachside (or harbor-side) sunset. Late summer is the best time to catch them, so you’re in luck.
