What is the Authors' Café

Taking place from 3:45 - 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, the Authors' Café will be a chance for authors to read from their work, discuss upcoming projects, and sign and sell copies of their books.

Registering as an Author

Registration Deadline: July 1, 2008

NLGJA members who wish to participate in the Café and to sign copies of their newest books must register no later than July 1, 2008. To register for consideration to speak at the Café, send an e-mail to Bob Witeck and include the following information:

  • Your name, mailing address, e-mail address, and day and evening telephone numbers.
  • The title of your book and the name of your publisher.
  • A one-paragraph synopsis of your book.

You must also provide confirmation that you are registered to attend NLGJA's National Convention and/or 5th Annual LGBT Media Summit or that you agree to make payment of $100 for the special Authors' Registration Rate (see note below). You must also indicate that you are making arrangements to have your title available at the event.

If you have paid and are registered to attend NLGJA's Convention & LGBT Media Summit in any capacity, you may take part in the Authors' Café at no extra cost. However, if you are not planning to register and attend the convention, we request a registration to participate in the Café. That special Author Registration Rate will be $100.00, and may be made payable by check or credit card to NLGJA.

Checks can be sent to NLGJA, 1420 K Street, NW, Suite 910, Washington, DC, 20005. Please write "Authors' Café" in the memo line of your check.

Reading at the Café

In the time available to hold the Authors' Café, it is possible that we may not be able to schedule all authors interested in conducting a reading. We hope that will not be the case, and we will do all that we can to find time for everyone to participate.

For the purposes of the Café, therefore, we will establish brief slots - between five and seven minutes - for spirited readings. Preference will be given to NLGJA members and all selections will be made by a lottery if the demand exceeds the limited time scheduled. In the past, the Café has hosted about ten to twelve writers.

Selected authors will be informed of the schedule for readings when they arrive and register at the convention.

On-Site Bookstore

Deadline: Friday, July 18

This year's Authors' Café is being held in coordination with DC's beloved LGBT bookseller, Lambda Rising Bookstore. Authors should e-mail a request to Tom Avila, NLGJA Deputy Executive Director, that includes the title of their book and their publisher's name no later than Friday, July 18, 2008. A list will be submitted to Lambda Rising's management at that time. There will be no exceptions made to this deadline.

Please understand that NLGJA assumes no responsibility for the shipment, delivery and handling of any books or for book sales. We cannot safely predict the quantity or popular interest in any titles. We anticipate that over 600 NLGJA members are likely to attend this year's convention in Washington, DC.
