NLGJA Insight, NLGJA's student project, provides real-world experience to undergraduate and graduate students who are considering a career in journalism.
Students participating in the 2010 Student Project will work with media professionals to report, edit, photograph, design and produce the news of NLGJA's National Convention while furthering their own interest in ensuring fair and accurate coverage of the LGBT community.
During the course of the program, members of the Student Project class will work with mentors from the journalism industry and interact with top LGBT media professionals from across the United States and Canada.
Is there a list for people who want to share a room at this year's convention?
No. The National office will not be able to arrange room sharing for any convention attendees this year. You are welcome to e-mail the NLGJA listserv to find a roommate on your own. There are often folks looking for ways to share the cost.
Why isn't breakfast being served on Friday or Saturday?
To decrease the cost of attendance this year, which is down 20% from last year for basic members, NLGJA has also decreased our expenses on meals. Coffee will be available both days, however.
Where did all the coffee go?
Surprisingly, coffee costs us $100 per gallon. That's $6.25 per cup – and you thought Starbucks was expensive.
If I can't afford to attend the 2010 Convention, is there a scholarship fund to help me?
NLGJA has a small Convention Assistance Fund (CAF) based on contributions from other fellow attendees. We will be awarding scholarships for the cost of the convention. If you would like to apply to receive a scholarship from the CAF, please e-mail Bach@nlgja.org with “CAF Application” in the subject Line.
You may also contribute to the CAF when you register for the convention, or through our Support Form by indicating your desire to do so in the reasons section.
When will the Excellence in Journalism Awards be presented?
The Excellence in Journalism Awards will be presented at the 20 th Anniversary Gala on the last night of the NLGJA Convention, Saturday September 4 th . You may apply to be considered for the Excellence in Journalism Awards through our EIJ Application.
Why do I have to pay extra to attend the NLGJA 20 th Anniversary Gala?
If you are staying at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco and attending the 2010 NLGJA Convention, your ticket for the Gala is already covered. Filling rooms at the Hyatt Regency reduces convention costs, so those staying anywhere other than the Hyatt Regency are required to pay an extra $40 for the Anniversary Gala. We also welcome those not registered for the convention to attend the 20 th Anniversary Gala at the same cost. You can purchase a ticket for the Gala here.
Will there be internet access at the convention?
There will be WiFi available in the Hyatt Regency hotel rooms and lobby; unfortunately, that WiFi does not extend below the lobby to our convention spaces*. We will provide a “Cyber Café” near the breakout spaces while programming is scheduled, similar to previous years. Cell phones and smart phones on national carriers will be usable.
*Convention Speakers who need an internet connection for their presentation should e-mail Bach@nlgja.org two weeks prior to the convention.
How can I find the breakout sessions I want to attend?
Click here for a full map of the hotel and convention spaces.
When will we know who is speaking and presenting? When will breakout sessions be announced?
We plan to have a preliminary list of speakers and presenters available the week of June 18 th and before the end of Early Bird Registration.
Where is the hotel? What public transportation is available?
The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is located on the corner of Embarcadero Drive and Market Street , overlooking the Bay and Bay Bridge . You will be able to find many restaurants, shopping and sightseeing attractions within just a few feet of our hotel. The Hyatt is located on the historic F-Line streetcar, which runs between the Castro District and Fisherman's Wharf.
What attractions will I be able to see while I'm attending?
