Professors, graduate students, undergraduate students, the news media, and others are encouraged to use the cited resources--most but not all of which are scholarly/academic in nature and intent--for teaching, research, reference, or other reasons. Because scholarly research published in "refereed" social science journals must conform to generally accepted standards of theoretical and methodological rigor, relatively few of the listed sources advocate specific political, cultural, religious, legal, or journalistic positions or goals, at least not without support from valid, reliable evidence and/or well articulated arguments. Some listed sources, in fact, may be perceived as unfavorable toward certain goals, positions, leaders, trends, etc., that are supported by many or most U.S. LGBT persons or organizations. Such sources are listed in the interest of representing all mainstream scholarship in the United States and Canada on LGBT subjects and mass communication, and in the interest of encouraging vigorous research, teaching, and debate.
Not all of the listed articles and books will be available in your nearest public or university library, nor are all listed books still in print.
Moreover, only some of the articles are available in full text in proprietary databases such as "Communication and Mass Media," and few, if any of the listed articles, are publicly and freely available on the World Wide Web. Therefore, users of these lists may have to request certain books and/or articles on these lists through interlibrary loan, which usually involves a wait of three days to three weeks and sometimes also a fee, and/or locate libraries that subscribe to databases that contain full-text versions of more of the articles. Many of the listed books are sometimes available, in new or used condition, from such sources as Amazon.com and Bookfinder.com.
These lists were prepared in mid-2005, and will be updated periodically. Specific suggestions for additions to these lists, including which list(s) a new listing should be added to, are welcome and should be sent to NLGJA Deputy Executive Director Tom Avila at tavila@nlgja.org.
