Scenes From Headlines & Headliners: NLGJA's 11th Annual New York Benefit
More than 400 NLGJA members and supporters attended the 11th Annual New York benefit, Headlines & Headliners, at the West Side Loft on Thursday, March 16. The crowd gathered to network and mingle with some of the news and entertainment industry’s top talent. The benefit, hosted by NBC Universal, was the most successful in its 11 years running, raising more than $150,000 for NLGJA’s programs.
The highlight of the evening was NLGJA awarding its first scholarship, which was announced by CNN Headline News Anchor and NLGJA member Thomas Roberts. The Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award was presented to Dennis Mitchell, a junior at Arizona State University. Mitchell is a second-year student at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communications. Named a “Student Journalist of the Year” by the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association and the Arizona Newspaper Foundation and a recipient of the Al Neuharth Freedom Forum Free Spirit Scholarship, Mitchell exemplifies the vision, dedication and passion the Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award was designed to celebrate.
Campbell Brown, co-anchor of the NBC News program “Today Weekend Edition,” was honorary host. Brown and NBC News President Steve Capus underscored the importance of NLGJA’s work in the industry to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues are covered fairly and accurately, particularly during this time when LGBT issues are so in the forefront of news events.
Jack Krumholtz, Associate GeneralCounsel/Managing Director, US Legal Government Affairs, Microsoft in acknowledging the importance of NLGJA both inside and outside of the news media, said, “NLGJA’s work enriches all of us. Your work is critical to affecting change.”
