Dear NLGJA Members & Friends,
On behalf of the NLGJA’s Transgender & Allies task force, I'd like to welcome you to our new Web site.
We are working hard to put the 'T' in LGBT in many areas, both within our organization and in the overall media industry. Internally, we have worked to make sure that transgender issues are part of the mix when it comes to professional development and other programming. Outside the organization, we have worked with the Rapid Response Task Force to monitor and act on unfair coverage of trans people as well as with the Newsroom Outreach Project to offer journalists more information about trans issues so they are better equipped to cover issues when they do arise.
One of our key efforts over this and coming years is to help the organization push forward with the Newsroom for Everyone Campaign, which seeks to get media organizations to add protections against discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. And that's a project we could use your help with. Please let us know if you have thoughts on how to bring that effort to your newsroom or company.
Our group is just one of the many different groups that NLGJA has launched to make sure that particular areas within the organization's broader mission are covered. Whether you are looking to meet people with a similar background, in the same type of media or share a common locale, NLGJA has a caucus or task force for you. I encourage you to find a listserv e-mail group or better yet, come to our National Convention to find others that share common ground.
If I can be of help, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Ina Fried
