The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) seek an individual with research, analytic, and statistical experience to assist in a special media project, under development by both AAJA and NLGJA, and in conjunction with the Ford Foundation.

This will be a contract position, from October 2012-January 2013, with the potential to develop into a full-time position in 2013. The position will work closely with the directors of both minority journalist groups, as well as partner with other professional journalism associations to which our members belong.

Duties Include:

  • Audit current local coverage of LGBT and minority issues and communities in broadcast, online, radio, and print from October-December 2012.
  • Compare coverage findings to national coverage trends. 
  • Develop a thesis of need based on metrics.
  • Assist in the development of a macro and micro plan for a 2-year project.
  • Assist in securing agreements of partnership, support and resources.
  • Assist in writing additional grant proposals and reports for the project.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Policy and research background required; an MPA or MPP is preferred.
  • Investigative journalism experience preferred, including data-based reporting.
  • Priority will be given to applicants with experience in working with media groups.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills in working with diverse communities.
  • Excellent writing skills are required.
  • Evidence of the ability to prioritize efficiently, coordinate with volunteers and develop creative solutions is expected.
  • Previous nonprofit experience preferred; previous association-related experience a plus.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Computer skills including MS Office.
  • Applicants will be asked to provide samples of prior projects that they have led or worked on with a team.
