Washington, DC – Today the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) announced an expansion of the Excellence in Journalism Awards by 11 categories.

Earlier this year, three award categories were added, Excellence in Sports Writing, Book Writing and Documentary. Including all the new categories, a sum total of 29 awards will be recognized in the 2016 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The additional awards categories include:

  • Excellence in Column Writing
  • Excellence in Feature Writing, non-daily
  • Excellence in a Digital Edition
  • Excellence in Digital Video
  • Excellence in Health or Fitness Coverage
  • Excellence in Newswriting, non-daily
  • Excellence in Podcasts
  • Excellence in Profile Writing
  • Excellence in Social Media
  • Excellence in Transgender Coverage
  • Excellence in Travel Writing

“With adding new categories such as Excellence in Transgender Coverage and Feature Writing non-daily we want to make sure our awards are as accessible and open to all,” said NLGJA President Jen Christensen. “NLGJA wants to showcase the great work we have seen in smaller markets, from freelancers and bloggers. We hope adding these categories will do just that in a way like we’ve never had a chance to before.”

The NLGJA Excellence in Journalism Awards were established in 1993 to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Submissions are due Tuesday, April 19, 2016. For more details on the awards and submission forms see www.nlgja.org/awards.

The Excellence in Journalism Awards will be presented throughout the NLGJA National Convention & LGBT Media Summit September 8-11 in South Beach Miami, FL. For more information on the awards and applying please visit: www.nlgja.org/awards.
