UNC’s NLGJA, or the Carolina Association of Queer Journalists as its referred to on campus, is an organization of undergrad and graduate students dedicated to discussing and encouraging accurate and respectful coverage of LGBT identities in media and promoting inclusiveness and diversity in newsrooms. We encourage and help coordinate leadership from campus publications to participate in Safe Zone training at UNC’s LGBTQ Center. We also hold workshops, at least twice per semester, on covering LGBT issues in communication fields, updating language in stylebooks and tackling ethical concerns in the newsroom. Our chapter would never work without our faculty adviser, professor Rhonda Gibson.
