Reporting on Transgender People and Issues

A heartbreaking story on the suicide of a 22-year-old transgender woman in suburban Chicago, as told by a local TV station, quoted the mother in a soundbite: “My last words to him were I love you, and his last words to me were, ‘I love you, mom, no matter what.”

A newspaper picked up the story, paraphrased quotes that used pronouns, and added this: “The grieving mother … referred to her child by male pronouns and her birth name.”

Was the TV station right in not clarifying why it was not using the transgender woman’s new name and pronouns?
Could it have done it differently?
