Out magazine released its Out 100 and journalists are well-represented among its “Class of 2009.”
Washington Post managing editor Liz Spayd, the Advocate’s Kerry Eleveld, and LGBT public relations maven Cathy Renna are featured as THE NEWSHOUND, THE SCRIBE & THE GO-BETWEEN.
Spayd says “[t]hese aren’t exactly the salad days of newsrooms, and even in the best of times it’s not easy trying to corral a bunch of journalists. But at least we get to wake up every day fighting for something we believe in.”
Eleveld says her trips to the White House briefings are the high-point of moving to Washington, D.C. to be the Advocate‘s Washington correspondent. Renna, who spent years at Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is a fixture now that’s she back in Washington running her own p.r. shop. She told Out that “our community’s biggest obstacle continues to be visibility of our full diversity and complexity. We have made progress but still have a long way to go.”
Also featured in the yearly list are Pam Spaulding and Arjan Timmermans, HLN host Jane-Velez Mitchell, New York Times writer Frank Bruni, and former AfterEllen.com editor Malinda Lo.
