This year, for the first time, the online journalism category for the NLGJA Excellence in Journalism Awards has been split into two categories: Online Journalism and Multimedia.
Our goal is to recognize online-only contributions, but we recognize there are a lot of people doing a lot of things online. Those range from independent blogs unconnected to traditional media outlets that have no advertising to sophisticated, multimedia journalism that often occurs in outlets operated by traditional media and huge budgets.
So, now there are two categories. Bloggers, citizen journalists, and online journalists are not limited to those categories, of course, but instead we hope to recognize the contributions and unique voice that often occur online and don’t easily fall into traditional news or opinion categories.
